Applications of Crepe Paper

  1. Calligraphy and Painting Creation This is the most essential use of Luowen paper. It absorbs ink immediately without spreading, clearly revealing the gradations of ink density and brushstroke details. Its moderate resistance during writing makes it suitable for various forms of creation, including regular script, running script, and freehand painting. It has long been favored by literati calligraphers and painters.
  2. Printing and Transcription of Ancient Texts During the Qing Dynasty, Luowen paper was used by the imperial court for printing precious texts. Examples include the Wuyingdian edition of “Lü Lü Zheng Yi” from the Yongzheng era and Xi Qiyu's engraved “Tang Bai Jia Shi,” both printed on plain white Luowen paper. The surviving copies exhibit an antique texture and ensure long-term preservation. It is also suitable for hand-copying and transcribing ancient texts.
  3. Restoration and Mounting of Ancient Texts: With its high tensile strength, fine texture, and color that closely matches aged original paper, gauze paper serves as an ideal repair material for ancient texts. It can mend damaged pages, reinforce brittle paper, and function as backing paper during mounting to protect historical manuscripts.
Binding and Decoration Ribbed paper can be dyed in various colors such as red, blue, and green. It serves as covers or endpapers (the front and back protective sheets) for ancient texts and thread-bound books, enhancing the refinement of the binding. Some ribbed papers featuring techniques like gold sprinkling or gold tracing can also be directly used to create stationery, bookmarks, or as decorative materials for traditional handicrafts.
