What Does the FSC Tree on Your Packaging Mean?
You’ve probably noticed a little tree logo with the letters “FSC” on books or packaging. It’s not just decoration—that tree tells a story.
FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, an international organization committed to protecting the world’s forests. Its mission is to promote responsible forest management that preserves wildlife habitats and respects the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities.
To make this possible, FSC runs a traceability system that follows wood from the forest to the shelf:
Forest Management (FM) certification
Think of it as a “green report card” for forests. It ensures wood comes from responsibly managed lands that follow sustainable practices.
Chain of Custody (CoC) certification
This acts like a “guardian certificate” for factories and brands. It guarantees that FSC-certified wood isn’t mixed with illegal or unsustainable sources along the supply chain—all the way to you.
When we talk about “FSC-certified products,” we usually mean those with CoC certification.
When shopping, you might spot one of these three labels:
FSC 100%
Every bit of wood or fiber comes from FSC-certified forests—fully sourced from sustainably managed land.
FSC Mix
Made from a blend of FSC-certified materials, recycled content, and “controlled wood.” All components meet basic environmental and social standards, avoiding illegal logging, human rights violations, or damage to high-value forests.
FSC Recycled
Contains 100% recycled material, such as post-consumer waste paper. This label highlights resource circulation and reduces pressure on original forests.
So next time you see that little tree, remember—it’s more than just a product. It’s a choice for the future of our forests.
