Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Paper for Garment Tags and Packaging

Created on 05.08
When selecting paper for garment tags and packaging, the real challenge lies in balancing aesthetics, performance, and consistency.
For garment tags, stiffness is the primary concern. A tag that feels too soft or flimsy can immediately lower the perceived value of the product. However, stiffness should not come at the expense of processability. Papers with poor fiber bonding may appear rigid but tend to crack or break during die cutting.
Color consistency is another critical factor, especially for global brands. Even slight variations between batches can create visible differences when tags are produced across multiple orders. This is particularly relevant when working with recycled papers, where fiber sources can vary.
In packaging applications—especially in cosmetics and fashion—surface texture becomes more important. A natural, slightly textured paper can enhance the tactile experience and strengthen brand identity. However, this must be balanced with print performance. If the surface is too absorbent or uneven, it may compromise color vibrancy and detail.
Printability itself depends on multiple variables, including surface sizing, coating, and ink compatibility. Papers that absorb ink too quickly can lead to dull colors, while those with low absorption may cause smudging or drying issues.
Processing adaptability is equally important. Whether it involves hot stamping, lamination, or UV coating, the paper must be compatible with downstream processes. Failure in this area often leads to higher rejection rates and increased production costs.
Ultimately, the best paper is not the one with the most impressive specifications, but the one that performs reliably across design, printing, and converting stages.
